About
I am a plasma astrophysicist in the Solar & Stellar X-Ray Group at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. I investigate the physics of magnetic reconnection in the solar chromosphere and corona using a combination of numerical simulations and analytical theory in order to understand solar eruptions as observed by Hinode, IRIS, and SDO. More generally, I work to build bridges among the heliospheric, laboratory, space, and astrophysical plasma physics communities. To that end, I am collaborating on the development of PlasmaPy: an open source Python package for plasma physics. I was an organizer for the Inclusive Astronomy 2015 conference and a founding co-chair of the American Astronomical Society's Working Group on Accessibility and Disability. I am also a lecturer in Harvard's Department of Astronomy where I developed and co-taught a graduate course in plasma astrophysics.
