About

I am an astronomer at the Smithsonian, best known for my discovery of Hypervelocity Stars, stars ejected from our galaxy by the Milky Way's central massive black hole. With Dr. Mukremin Kilic, I am leading a targeted survey for merging pairs of white dwarfs that are among the strongest known sources of gravitational waves for the future LISA gravitational wave observatory. I direct the Smithsonian's Optical Infrared Telescope Data Center, and chair the telescope Time Allocation Committee. I rebuilt the workhorse FAST spectrograph on the FLWO 1.5m telescope, and I am PI of the MMT Cam optical imager.
