Multiphase Madness: Resolving the CGM in Theory and Observations

Event Details:
The CGM poses many unsolved questions that are critical to understanding galaxy evolution. Recent observations—spanning from radio to optical to X-ray—are beginning to constrain the properties of gas around galaxies, and future observatories will be critical in this endeavor. The multiphase CGM also poses many challenges to simulators, due to the vast dynamic range involved in the interactions between its different phases. This workshop will focus on these interactions, with the goal of facilitating discussion between experts across domains in both theory and observations. To encourage conversation and collaboration, we will limit attendance to 40 people.
The main topics of this conference are:
- The interaction between the hot, warm, and cold phases of the CGM
- Observing and characterizing the hot phase of the CGM
- Constraining the smallest and coldest structures in the CGM from observations
- The impact of multiphase structure of the CGM on galaxy formation and evolution
- Near-future instruments/surveys to probe the multi-phase CGM
- Theoretical and numerical techniques designed to better model the CGM
A registration fee of $75 will cover coffee breaks, snacks, lunches, and the Thursday evening river cruise.
