As these galaxies move to the right, the gaseous Magellanic Stream billows behind them, intertwining and stretching across the southern sky. The illustration also shows the 13 red giant stars discovered in the Magellanic Stellar Stream.

The neutral hydrogen gas of the Magellanic Stream is displayed in blue, spanning almost the entire southern sky. Red stars indicate the thirteen red giant stars identified by Chandra et al. to be members of the Magellanic Stellar Stream.
