Star Stories - FLWO
The oral tradition of preserving memory through stories told about the night sky has preserved cultures as far back as the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians. Whipple Observatory and KGVY radio are reviving this tradition, and we want to know about your first, best, or most important interaction with the night sky to help us honor the connection between our dark sky communities and our amazing universe.
How it works:
Submit your 200-300 word story about your first, best, or most important interaction with the night sky to WhippleScienceCenter@gmail.com. We will contact entrants on a rolling basis if we require more information.
Guidelines:
- Submissions are open to anyone, of any age, anywhere in the world.
- Submissions must be provided in English.
- Submissions may be 200-300 words in length, and should tell the story of your first, best, or most important interaction with the night sky--please remember that this should be a true story; this is not a fiction program.
- Whipple Observatory staff and volunteers will serve as judges.
- Submissions accepted on a rolling basis until further notice.
- Submissions must be emailed to WhippleScienceCenter@gmail.com
Then what?:
This program has changed a lot given the current coronavirus pandemic. Please note that every entry will be honored in some way. Select entrants will be asked to audio record their story (you can do this on your iPhone, your computer, etc.) for inclusion in a pop-up podcast that we are producing weekly for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic. When things settle down and get back to normal, we'll select some stories for further programs, like inclusion in our upcoming Night Sky exhibit, being played or read on KGVY radio, and becoming a part of a printed book that will be available at Whipple Observatory's Visitor & Science Center, or by mail.
Other terms:
All writers will be asked to sign a media and consent of use waiver. All writers will be asked to sign a print permission waiver. For young writers, legal guardians will be asked to waive.
