Backgound
- The NSF awarded the ALMA North America Prototype Antenna to SAO in 2011
- SAO - ASIAA partnership to deploy the antenna for operation in Greenland
- ASIAA lead the refurbishment of the telescope for the cold environment as well as development of the first three receivers installed, operating at 86GHz, 230GHz and 345GHz
- The project plans a two phased approach
- establish operations and prove performance at Thule Air Base
- transfers the telescope to the summit for long term and higher frequency observations
Science goals
- Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) to image the shadow of the Black Hole at the center of the galaxy M87
- Submillimeter astronomy in single dish mode
