Walking from the Harvard Square MBTA station:
The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics is about a half-mile and a 15-minute walk west of Harvard Square. Leave the Harvard Station by the Church Street exit, turn right on Massachusetts Ave., then left on Garden Street at the Cambridge Common. Bear right after the Sheraton-Commander Hotel, and the CfA is another two blocks on the left. From the Porter Station, walk back toward Harvard Square, turn right on Linnaean Street and keep walking straight on into the CfA's entrance driveway.
By bus or trolley from the Harvard Square MBTA station:
Take the 72, 74, 75, or 78 bus from the upper bus level of Harvard Station and ask to be let off at the “observatory steps” on Concord Avenue [Concord Ave opp Buckingham St]. Climb the steps to the rear parking lot. For more information, visit the MBTA website.
By bicycle
There are many great bicycling routes to reach the HCO at 60 Garden Street. CycleToScience (a project by CfA postdoc Juliana Cherston) documents several of these options.
Bike racks are located at the main entrance and second floor back entrance. Resources are available to bikers on the Harvard Commuter Choice Bike page including discounted helmets, benefits, parking on campus and bike share programs.
Students, faculty, and staff are strongly encouraged to register their bicycles. Registration serves as a deterrent to theft and can help in the recovery of stolen bicycles. The serial number is recorded and an identifying sticker is placed on your bicycle.
By Harvard Shuttle:
- The Harvard Shuttle can be taken from the Square up Garden Street to the Quad (Express, Stadium, or Yard Express pending time of day)
- The shuttle typically runs every 10-15 minutes during the week and will drop you off on the steps of the Currier House.
- Walk out towards Linnean Street (where the shuttle drove in from), turn left towards the traffic lights and the Observatory will be straight ahead up the hill.
You can track all Harvard Shuttles online here.
By car:
From the northwest:
Take Route 2 to the Alewife-Concord Rotary, follow Concord Avenue into Cambridge and cross Huron Avenue, turn left on Madison Street and then right into the CfA's rear parking lot.
